3 red flashing lights, xbox?

My husband seems to think that he can fix this by taking it apart and doing something with the soldering. (saying the ‘hardware failure’ problem was from faulty soldering) Surprise surprise, the warranty expired about 1 month and 3 days before it broke. (Yes, we did all the troubleshooting that ‘max’ the recorded voice at 1-800-4my-xbox suggests)

Has anyone tried this and does it work? We can’t really afford the $139.90 that microsoft wants to fix the problem, but i’m concerned that if he takes it apart they won’t fix it at all, should we ever come up with the money for it.

If its an original xbox, you might do better to just buy a used console from gamestop. They are like $80. Of course you won’t have the data on the drive. Your husband might be able to swap the hard drives out though. (if the drive is ok)
I don’t know what that error is though.

Go to Microsoft’s website and look and see what a 3 flashing redlights means. I already know and there is no easy answer. Pay the 139.90 and get it fixed and never ever let your hubby touch it again.

Disconnect everything then plug just the power cord in and just the basic cables directly into the TV. Do not plug the ethernet or WIFI in yet. See if you can boot it without getting the lights. If not it may or may not be hardware it maybe a harddrive issue. Too many temp files and such messing up the system.

yes i would if i was you because most likely the hard drive needs to be replaced and if your husband doen’t know what he is doing he can make more damage and its gona cost u more to repair it.

3 flashing red lights = General Hardware Failure
The failure is caused by overheating. The solder get loose after the console overheats.
I took mine apart and applied new thermal compound to the CPU and GPU and installed new fans. Have not had a lock up or the rings since my fix. Didn’t have to solder anything. Just used a hot air gun to heat up the board.
FYI. I had 4 months left on my warranty. I just didn’t want to wait a month for a refurb. box.

For a quick and temporary (maybe permanent?) fix, try the towel trick:
