Does a cooling unit for Xbox360 help prevent the red ring of death?

red ring of death
Becky M asked:

I have been lucky enough to avoid the red ring of death so far, but I would like to know if there is any way to help prevent it. If it’s through the cooling unit or otherwise.
Also if you know of any articles that state this online could you post a reference.

It depends on the problem. If it’s an overheating issue, yes. If it’s a hardware/software issue, no.

Bought my first 360 on March of 2006 (first gen) and hook it up with Nyko Xbox 360 Intercooler (cost $20). Played as much as and as long as I wanted. After 2years I shorted out my Intercooler, I played without it (still first gen) for 2 months and got Red ring of death.
Send it to Microsoft for repair (covered by extended warranty). Got a new 360 from them played GTA 4 for 1 months (without the Intercooler) and started having problems.
Send it in again(got a new 90 day warranty), anyway they fixed it and send it back. Now I bought another Nyko Xbox 360 Intercooler and Live happily ever after.
Moral of the story is buy the Nyko Xbox 360 Intercooler for $20 then you can play as long as you want without being worrying about Red ring of Death.
