What does 3 flashing red lights on an Xbox 360 mean? I know its a hardware failure, but what is the cause?

My Xbox recently did this and I had to send it back for repair. Although Microsoft is eating all the costs, they didnt say what actually caused the problem. The top right light on the Ring of Light is the only one not on. All of the others flash red.

Overheating, turn it off for about half an hour and then it will work fine. Its happened to mine before also, nothing drastic though.

It could be several things. It could be video card failure, overheating… Microsoft has not confirmed what it is exactly, but the best explanation we’ve received is HARDWARE FAILURE. Yeah, pretty generic. Anyway, sorry to hear about your xbox. We’re on our third replacement unit because of the three flashing red lights- and we really take good care of ours.

Overheating. Sometimes it works afterwards sometimes it doesn’t. Microsoft should take care of it. This is why I bought a PS3 instead.

I think this is a question a lot of Xbox 360 owners are wondering. When Microsoft announced that they were extending the warranty on all Xbox 360 consoles, they said they were unsatisfied with the quality of their product, and therefore that was why they were extending the warranty. They never mentioned what was causing the consoles to malfunction. A lot of gaming review websites say it has to do with overheating and the destruction of some internal components that cause the aptly named “ring of death” to show. Microsoft never released an official statement saying what was causing the hardware failures.

No one really knows because MS has been keeping quiet about what’s causing it.
Most people think it’s overheating that’s causing the hardware to fail. MS is going to replace the 90 nm chip with the 65 nm chip, which runs cooler, so that should reduce a lot of overheating, which in turn should reduce the number of hardware failures.

hold down the connect controller button and press the eject button. the lights will flash. write dow the ones that flash and do this 3 more times. thats a hidden error code. look it up online to discover the problem. the console still mat not know the error, though
